He's a director/writer/artist who made some fantastic anime.

Paprika and Millennium Actress are both phenomenal.
Millennium actress is about this actress telling two documentary writers about her life through the films she starred in, it's damn good.
Tokyo Godfathers is a love or hate film, though.

Roujin Z is well animated, but the story is very... meh. It's hard to enjoy. It's about an old man in a robotic care bed that goes berserk and starts assimilating everything after tapping into his brain to see what his needs and wants are, and tries to take him to see the beach where he met his late wife, and destroys EVERYTHING on the way.

Paranoia Agent is a mindfuck. It's also very love or hate, but I can't deny it was well directed.
The anime industry suffered a huge loss with this guy's death.

Nobody here ever talks about anime except you. =\ I used to talk about it, but nobody really cared. Anyway, I never watched any of the shows he made. I may give it a look, but I dislike super serious animes.
