Jan:

Code: Select all
Follow these easy steps to disable the automatic restart feature for system failures in Windows XP.
Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: Disabling the Automatic Restart option in Windows XP usually takes less than 10 minutes
Here's How:

Navigate to the Control Panel in Windows XP by left-clicking on Start, followed by Settings and then choosing Control Panel.

In the Control Panel window, open System.

Note: In Microsoft Windows XP, depending on how your operating system is setup, you may not see the System icon. To correct this, click on the link on the left-hand side of the Control Panel window that says Switch to Classic View.

In the System Properties window, click on the Advanced tab.

Locate the Startup and Recovery area and click on the Settings button.

In the Startup and Recovery window, locate and uncheck the check box next to Automatically restart.

Click OK in the Startup and Recovery window.

Click OK in the System Properties window.

From now on, when a problem causes a BSOD or another major error that halts the system, the PC will not automatically reboot. Rebooting manually will be necessary.

next time your computer crashes, it will produce a blue screen with error codes and debug information.
snap a photo of it and post it and I'll see what I can do to help.

justin showed me a windows 7 "upgrade" but i don't even have xp so ya

it's also hard to prove i'm a student because i don't have a student email but if necessary I'll go to my college to help verify if it saves a lot of bucks

Not a bad build but I would go AMD to save like ~$100.

008E errors are hardware issues.

Your ram is probably bad.

Also, if you want a student discount on Windows 7, try your college's book store, they usually have it there for the student price.

it really isn't.

price/performance wise, a Phenom IIx4 955 is your best bet.

Yeah I told him the same thing on vent, that his RAM might be failing. Also told him to run memtest on it to verify. Good idea to check the book store for Windows 7.

Its just spending extra money for no good reason. This AMD quad runs 400 mhz faster than the intel one in your Amazon wishlist and its $20 cheaper. I found that in like 10 seconds. AMD's price/performance is just too good to not get it IMO. Put aside any bias that you or your friend's may have and just get the best processor for your needs. Spend the extra money elsewhere on something like a larger monitor or a nice mouse etc.

AMD in general is the best price/performance wise Jan, not just the 955 that Woy is suggesting. Sounds about right though, Newegg has the 955 for $120 free shipping. Its so fucking tempting to buy it for myself right now haha.

so, this video card is pretty sexy:

you MIGHT be able to unlock shader cores on it too.
It's a shame you couldn't buy 2 months ago when reference model 6950s were still selling.
I managed to snap one up and flash it with 6970 firmware and it purrs like a kitten.

stock 6950 is great though.

I don't know if i really want a 24" dude..
:S

seems way too big imo

19~ 21 seems better to go

i think i'm also going to stick with the intel cpu

justin said with the way things are going right now intel > amd
and with my budget i should probably go with intel since it'll probably turn out better in the long run

inputs?

Dude. You're getting a slower CPU for the same money as the phenom ii 955..

Just because someone says intel > amd means you should go with intel? dumb biases are dumb.

Edit - Look for yourself. BTW I was pretty drunk last night and forgot a couple things. Also 22" screens are pretty affordable if you don't want to go 24".

intel processors are only for people who do math-heavy work, like video encoding or crunching tripcodes.

even them, you're better off using a GPU to do those things.
